Description: Salvation (What it is, How to receive it and What to do with it after you’ve got it)

Section: Introduction

Salvation is one of the most contested topics in Christendom.

If we are to understand what God says about this topic we must proceed entirely from the Word of God.

The English word salvation is the translation of a number of Greek words of which this study will concentrate on one only, that being the Greek word sozo (sozo).  One of the many uses of sozo is wholeness.  And it is wholeness physically, mentally and spiritually that we need to investigate from God’s Word.

In the Power for Abundant Living class we learned that the first usage of a word in the Bible is important, defining how the word is used in scriptures that follow.  This truth is demonstrated clearly in the first usage of the word sozo in Matthew 1:21

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

The name Jesus (Joshua in the Old Testament) means to save.  And Jesus, the only begotten son of God, was sent into the world to save mankind from their sins.
For the Christian church the pivotal verses regarding salvation are Romans 10:9-10

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The unsaved must do two things in order to achieve salvation. Confess Jesus as Lord in their lives and believe that God has raised him (Jesus) from the dead.
